Our Trail Towns are the four incorporated towns along the Elk River Water Trail. From north to south, they are Sutton, the county seat of Braxton County (population 876); Gassaway in Braxton County (population 755); Clay, the county seat of Clay County (population 399); and Clendenin in northern Kanawha County (population 866). Each of them has the small-town beauty, charm and unique history that you would expect in West Virginia. From the Sutton Dam in Sutton, to the Train Depot in Gassaway, to the Visitors Center and Rail Explorers in Clay, to the oil and gas and timber town of Clendenin, birthplace of Union Carbide, there is much to be explored in these towns. Links to their websites are on this website.
