There are a few campsites available on the north or west side of the river (opposite the rail trail side of the river, which most generally runs on the east/south side of the river). Currently, there are no designated camping sites along the rail trail. Camping on trail property is controlled by WV Division of Natural Resources rules, which provide that camping is permitted only at designated sites. As of March 1, 2026, no campsites had been designated on Elk River Trail. Public campgrounds near the water trail – generally on the opposite side of the river from the rail trail – are listed on this website.

Lodging, primarily airBNBs, is available in and near the Trail Towns and near many of the Trailheads. Check the accompanying data for each trailhead and water access point to see nearby airBNBs, motels and hotels, and RV parking and campsites. Many of them offer unique overnight stay opportunities such as yurts, domes, historic venues, views of the river, agri-tourism, and magnificent vistas.
