This summer, the Elk River Trail received a fresh dose of creativity and community spirit thanks to a group of talented students from Clay County High School. During the school’s Career and Technology Education Camp, woodworking instructor Allen Hamrick led students in crafting something truly special: a custom-made chair for the trail’s beloved Bigfoot sculpture.
Last year, Hamrick’s students built the towering 10.5-foot Bigfoot that has delighted hikers near Ivydale. But over the past year, the friendly forest giant suffered an unfortunate mishap, losing one of his arms. Determined to make things right, this summer’s students not only repaired Bigfoot’s arm with care and craftsmanship, but also gave him a brand-new walking stick and went above and beyond by designing and building a sturdy trailside chair fit for a legend.
On July 30th, the group returned to the trail to install Bigfoot’s new arm, secure his walking stick, and cement his chair firmly into place. Now, hikers heading north toward Duck will discover a bigger, better, and even more photo-worthy Bigfoot waiting to greet them along the trail.
But this whimsical project is more than just a fun addition — it’s a testament to the power of local talent, pride, and creativity. Projects like this show how the trail connects not only communities but generations, inspiring young people to leave their mark and contribute to something lasting.
Landmarks like Bigfoot spark curiosity, create memories worth sharing, and give trail-goers something to look forward to on their journey. If you haven’t yet visited, now’s the perfect time to lace up your boots and hit the trail. The Elk River Trail offers not just quirky photo opportunities, but a chance to slow down, breathe deeply, and rediscover the beauty and surprises that await around every bend.
The Elk River Trail stretches an impressive 73 miles from Gassaway to Clendenin, offering opportunities for walking, cycling, horseback riding, and paddling. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful escape or a new outdoor adventure, there’s something for everyone along the route.
