The Elk River Trail Foundation proudly celebrated its 4th Annual Elk River Trail Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K on September 14th, welcoming nearly 700 runners from 20 states to the scenic riverside trail stretching from Gassaway toward Clay. With clear skies, cool air, and stunning views along the Elk River, this year’s race offered perfect conditions for runners and spectators alike.
Among this year’s participants was Jennifer Clark of Mississippi, who completed her 353rd half marathon on the Elk River Trail! Having raced in every state, Jennifer shared that this was her fourth event in West Virginia. She expressed her love for the trail’s natural beauty and excitement over this year’s race shirts and medals, which proudly featured a local legend — the Braxton County Flatwoods Monster.
Traveling the farthest distance to compete were Carla Stewart and Eric DeBelly from Washington State, edging out Heather and Brian VandenBroek from Utah for the “Farthest Traveled” distinction. Brian VandenBroek also claimed the title of overall marathon winner with a time of 3:15:53:48.
The event also welcomed long-distance legends Glen Anderson and Karen Murray Anderson of Roanoke, Virginia. Glen has completed marathons in all 50 states 11 times, placing him 7th on the all-time males list, while Karen has achieved the 50-state milestone seven times, ranking 2nd on the all-time females list.
One of the day’s most exciting moments came from nine-year-old Isla Hughart of Summersville, West Virginia, who won the female 5K race with an impressive time of 24:31:22!
Full race results and winners are available at APTiming.com.
But the Elk River Trail Marathon is about more than just miles and medals. It serves as an important fundraiser for the Elk River Trail Foundation, helping support ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance the trail so it remains a welcoming space for all.
None of this would be possible without the incredible support of our volunteers, community partners, and sponsors. From cheering at water stations to managing setup and cleanup, their dedication keeps this event running smoothly each year. Special thanks also go to APTiming LLC and our local supporters for helping the race continue to grow.
As we look ahead, we’re already excited for next year’s race and hope to welcome even more runners to experience the beauty and spirit of the Elk River Trail. Stay connected with us on Facebook or visit our website for updates and registration details for next year’s event.
We can’t wait to see you on the trail!
