Location Description
Located just across the river from the Town of Clay, the county seat of Clay County, at the confluence with Buffalo Creek. A Visitor’s Center with a small museum is planned for this site. This trailhead is close to the center of the trail. It is a picturesque site featuring a vine-covered steel railroad bridge. The 18-mile rails-with-trails section of Elk River Trail starts here, where the Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad intersected with the B&O Railroad running along Elk River.
Parking & Features
Plenty of parking available on a gravel lot. This is the site of the future Elk River Trail Visitor’s Center.
Directions From I-79
From I-79 exit 34 (Wallback/Clay) (11.5 miles): Head east on WV-36 S - 7.5 mi. Turn left onto WV-4 N - 2.5 mi. At the Go-Mart, turn right onto Main Street (State Route 16) - 1.2 mi. Turn left onto Triplett Ridge Rd (Veterans Memorial Bridge) - 0.2 mi. Turn right onto Dundon Road at end of bridge - 26 ft. Take an immediate right down the hill onto Buffalo Creek Rd - 0.1 mi.
